The complete guide to Mac
caches and how to clear them.

2โ€“8 GB
Browser caches (all browsers combined)
3โ€“10 GB
App caches in ~/Library/Caches
20โ€“50 GB
Developer caches (Xcode, npm, etc.)
1โ€“5 GB
System logs in ~/Library/Logs

User Caches (~/Library/Caches)

This is the biggest single cache folder on most Macs. Every app stores its own subdirectory here โ€” Spotify, Slack, Chrome, Mail, Xcode, and hundreds more. These caches were designed to speed up apps, but after years of use they grow without limit. It's perfectly safe to clear them โ€” each app will rebuild its cache on next launch.

Browser Caches

Each browser maintains its own separate disk cache for web images, scripts, and page data. On a heavily used Mac with multiple browsers:

  • Chrome โ€” ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/Default/Cache
  • Firefox โ€” ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/
  • Safari โ€” ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
  • Edge โ€” ~/Library/Caches/Microsoft Edge/Default/Cache
  • Brave โ€” ~/Library/Caches/BraveSoftware/

Combined, these often reach 3โ€“8 GB. CleanMachine clears all of them in one scan โ€” with a warning if any browser is still open (to prevent database corruption).

System Logs

macOS and every app generates log files in ~/Library/Logs and /private/var/log. These are for debugging and are safe to clear. On a Mac that's been running for years, logs can accumulate to 2โ€“5 GB.

Language Packs (.lproj files)

Every macOS app ships with translation files for 40+ languages. If you only use English (or one language), those other .lproj folders are pure waste โ€” often 100โ€“500 MB per large app. CleanMachine identifies and removes all non-active language packs.

Developer Caches

If you're a developer, the biggest cache culprits are usually:

  • Xcode DerivedData (~10โ€“30 GB on an active project) โ€” rebuild artifacts that regenerate on next build
  • iOS Simulators (~5โ€“20 GB) โ€” cloned iPhone/iPad images for testing
  • npm cache (~1โ€“5 GB) โ€” Node.js package cache in ~/.npm/_cacache
  • pip cache (~500 MBโ€“2 GB) โ€” Python package cache
  • Gradle cache (~2โ€“10 GB) โ€” Java/Android build cache in ~/.gradle/caches
  • Homebrew cache (~500 MBโ€“3 GB) โ€” downloaded package installers in ~/Library/Caches/Homebrew
All caches are safe to clear. That's the definition of a cache โ€” it exists to speed things up and regenerates when needed. CleanMachine moves cache files to CleanMachine Trash (recoverable) rather than permanent deletion, just in case.

Common questions.

Is it safe to clear app caches?

Yes. Caches are designed to be cleared โ€” that's why they're called caches. Each app will recreate its cache from scratch on next launch. The only effect you'll notice is apps might open a tiny bit slower the first time after clearing, then return to normal. Nothing important is stored exclusively in caches.

Will clearing browser caches log me out?

Clearing the browser cache does not affect cookies (which keep you logged in). CleanMachine specifically targets the disk cache, not cookie files. You stay logged in to all your sites.

How often should I clear my Mac's caches?

For most users, clearing caches every 3โ€“6 months is plenty. CleanMachine's Auto-Clean feature (included with the $19.99 purchase) can schedule browser cache cleaning automatically on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule โ€” so you never have to think about it.

What about the system cache (/Library/Caches)?

CleanMachine focuses on user-owned caches (~/Library/Caches) and selected system log paths. System-level caches require admin privileges and are more sensitive โ€” CleanMachine takes a conservative approach here and only clears what's demonstrably safe.
